Application for TRP

OUT OF CHARACTER:
Name/Handle: Ang
Contact: [plurk.com profile] hopepunk or WondaMeerkat#4372 on Discord.
DF Alum: N
Referral: Lore

IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Clarice M. Starling
Character journal: [personal profile] thesepreciousthings
Series name: Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter novels, notably The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal.
Canon notes: Coming from the end of Hannibal. As the new series Clarice airs, I may use it to augment the time between the two novels, since that is when the series will be taking place. In the event that I do, I will be sure to wait at least a month before mentioning any aired content in-game, in keeping with what I found in the TRP FAQ.
Species: Human
Age: 36 (as of the year 2004)
Arrival Condition: Healthy

History: Wiki link here. In addition, I have made a detailed breakdown of the difference between the films and the novels, along with excerpts, here. (CW: misogyny, cannibalism, hypnotherapy)

Personality:
  • Intelligent: As she came from a poor background, the best way for Clarice to stand out as she grew up was to make sure her grades were good. She graduated at the top of her classes in high school, college, and the FBI. Her focus is in behavioral sciences and psychology, which means she is extremely adept at reading people and their motives. In addition, her FBI training for crime scenes has given her an incredible eye for detail and patterns. She speaks several languages, among them Spanish, French, and Italian, and is a quick study for others, should the opportunity to learn them on other planets arise.

  • No-Nonsense:This is a tacit way of saying that Starling has a very highly effective bullshit detector, and she does not take well to anyone who tries to fast-talk their way out of a situation, downplay, or sugarcoat things. She calls a spade a spade, though not to the point of bluntness. Because of her background and career, she believes there should not be any time wasted when discussing things of importance. This does not, however, mean she does not know how to let her hair down and have fun. Once she makes friends with someone she will fall into an easy routine of joking with them, and become noticeably more relaxed.

  • Sympathetic: While I would not go so far as to call Clarice empathetic, she is always able to find a touchstone with the people she needs to help, so that the connection to the problem becomes more personal, and therefore more real to her. While investigating the serial murders of Buffalo Bill in particular, she thinks of traits she shared with the murdered girls at her age. It is easy for her to put herself in other people's shoes as long as she has a moment to consider the situation from different angles. When she goes to visit Dr. Lecter's former hospital orderly for information, she is kind to him and accommodating, even though she has enough evidence that she could arrest him. While exploring an abandoned mental institution, she encounters a former patient and a vagrant, and treats them both with respect instead of fear or prejudice, knowing that she is the one trespassing in what they consider their home.

  • Morally Driven: As mentioned above, Clarice excels in order to advance and be noticed and/or validated. But her drive does not come from her ego or the accolades of others: it comes from her desire to do what she personally believes is right. This is an airtight sense of personal justice and decency instilled in her by her parents, and ultimately what she considers both first and last before making any major decisions in her life. She resorts to vigilantism by her canon point, because she knows that legal and bureaucratic systems are too corrupt and easily swayed to be able to be truly called just. She believes that all human beings should be treated with common decency and equality, and that base rudeness and prejudice are not to be abided.

  • Social Chameleon: Between her upbringing, her FBI training, and her time with Dr. Lecter, Clarice can be equally at ease with blue-collar country folk as she can with high political figures. She slips into street slang with her roommate Ardelia when they are at home together, slings professional jargon and takes control deftly while part of a jump-out squad on a drug raid, can conduct herself professionally in interviews and political settings, and still navigates among a series of luxury goods dealers with ease when tracking down Lecter's trail in Italy. Between her behavioral science training, her sense of sympathy, and her inclination to treat people as equally (until given reason not to via boorish or cruel behavior), Clarice endeavors to get along with as many people in her life as possible.

  • Cultured: Clarice has a sense of taste which she cultivates over the course of canon: slowly at first, with the acquisition of a good expensive handbag, and eventually expands to her tastes in wine and clothing. She treats it as a guilty pleasure at first, sneaking fashion magazines as though they were pornography, but finds that she has an eye for fine things. Once she begins her "new" life with Hannibal, that taste is not only allowed to flourish, but encouraged. She develops a love for fine art, music, and theater, and is enthusiastic about trying new experiences and enjoying them from every sensory point of view. Being on Agra 10 will be culture shock after the high life of 2004 Buenos Aires, but that simply means that when Starling does find a small luxury of any sort, she will savor it to its fullest potential, falling back on her humble roots to sustain her on a planet with meager resources.

Abilities: Clarice is by no means superhuman, but at her canon point she has a mnemonic system called a Memory Palace which helps her retain detail and information with surprising clarity and accuracy. She is also in good physical condition, able to run significant distances at a steady pace, and won the FBI's Pistol Range Champion award for her marksmanship - both in speed and accuracy. She is also knowledgeable about handling sheep and horses from her time on the ranch in Montana and the Lutheran orphanage at Bozeman - this animal husbandry may come in handy as well, from what I've read of the setting.

Personal Item: An M1911A1 Colt .45 pistol (image), inherited from her former instructor, John Brigham. It is up to the mods' discretion whether or not the weapon comes with the pancake holster she favors in the novels for carrying it. I have already discussed the weapon in the FAQ here and am aware that she will need to find or make additional ammunition.

Sample: Top Level @ the TDM & TDM thread w/ Dr. Drake Riley.
